Mercedes is planning to launch 10 electric cars by 2022 and we already know about a few of them such as the EQA compact hatchback, eVito van, and the EQC small SUV. However, recently the automaker announced that a large electric luxury sedan called Mercedes EQ S Electric will also be a part of the fleet.
Talking to Autocar about the new electric sedan, Michael Kelz, Mercedes large-car manager mentioned that the Mercedes EQ S Electric will offer luxury at the level of S-Class but will not exactly be the S-Class.
The Mercedes S-Class rides on a platform codenamed ‘MRA’ which does not support an all-electric powertrain. However, the EQ S luxury sedan will ride on a new modular architecture called ‘MEA’ which was also previewed in the ‘Generation EQ Concept’ displayed at the 2016 Paris Auto Show. The MEA platform will officially make its debut next year with the EQC SUV.
Talking about the design of the electric saloon, Kelz mentioned that they will have short overhangs for front and rear and a large wheelbase.
Details regarding the performance and powertrain are currently unknown but we can expect the EQ S sedan to have over 300 miles range. Hopefully, the automaker will publish more info in the coming months.
