Volkswagen has decided to reveal the 2018 Volkswagen Touareg at the prestigious 2018 Beijing Auto Show that will commence on March 23rd this year. The mid-size SUV will, however, not make an entry into the US market. The German automaker has released a sole teaser image to entice customers with its new flagship vehicle.

The spy shots of the most recent prototype show the new SUV with a wider and more vigorous look compared to the previous model. The Touareg is expected to weigh less than its predecessor and also have an updated interior cabin. A new digital instrument cluster, which Volkswagen is terming the Innovision Cockpit, and the latest driving aids will grace the vehicle’s interior.

Providing an upgrade to the SUV with the MLB platform, which includes rear-wheel steering, air suspension, and roll stabilization, VW hopes to bring the 2018 Volkswagen Touareg on par with the Audi Q7, Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne.

The Touareg has been overlooked for US markets in favor of the more heavily priced Atlas, which is locally produced. The high price of $50,405 led to fewer sales (1,630 in 6 months) for the 2017 2-row Touareg, forcing the company to make this decision.

Customers can rejoice though, as Volkswagen has confirmed the production of an SUV to be made in their Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. It is believed that a production version of the 2015 Cross Coupe GTE Concept could be a preferred choice.

Volkswagen has made no comment on the engine options that will accompany the mid-size SUV. However, it is likely that a hybrid drivetrain will run in tandem with the engine.
