The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has inaugurated a new bridge at the Airport Road-Casablanca Street intersection, close to the Cargo Village building, to eliminate traffic congestion at the signal. The bridge will be operational from tomorrow.
“Upgrading the intersection of Airport Road and Casablanca Street includes the construction of an additional single-lane bridge for serving the traffic from the Airport Road heading towards Casablanca Street,” said Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA.
The initiative comprises of building a replacement track for drivers arriving from Al Garhoud, allowing them direct entry to Terminal (1) and Terminal (3) of the Dubai International Airport.
Al Tayer also mentioned that they have plan to enhance the number of tracks of Casablanca Street toward Al Garhoud from three to four. This will ease traffic jam due to overlapping of vehicles going to Casablanca intersection and those arriving from Terminal (1) and leading left to Casablanca Street.
“The Improvement of the Airport Street Project is part of the RTA plan to accommodate the projected growth in the number of passengers using the Dubai International Airport, which is expected to shoot to 92 million passengers by 2020,” said Al Tayer.
As the project reaches its completion, the Airport road will be able to accommodate 5,000 vehicles per hour, improve the safety level, and eliminate congestion.
“Upgrading the Airport Road Project encompasses improving the intersection of Airport-Nad Al Hamar Streets through the construction of an additional two-lane bridge to serve the traffic from Nad Al Hamar Street heading towards Airport Road,” said Al Tayer.
“The project also includes improving the intersection of Marrakech-Airport Streets through constructing a flyover of three lanes in each direction on Airport Road along with a ramp stretching from the bridge directly to Terminal 3 of the Dubai International Airport, thus bypassing the light signal.
“It also includes constructing a tunnel of two lanes in each direction to serve the leftward-bound traffic from Airport Road in the direction of Marrakech Street,” explained Al Tayer.
