At the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, the Korean automaker introduced the Nexo SUV – a fuel cell vehicle replacing Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell. The model was initially previewed at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show as FE Fuel Cell concept.
With deliveries expected at the end of this year, the Nexo is based on a bespoke platform that has been used to enhance weight and packaging. The automaker has also introduced a new powertrain to reduce the overall weight of the vehicle and preserve space.
The Nexo SUV houses an electric powertrain generating 160 hp and 291 pound-feet of torque. This mild power can take the vehicle to 60 mph in 9.5 seconds while the range would be 370 miles on a single hydrogen fill. The range seems promising in comparison to the Toyota Mirai (312 miles), the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell (365 miles) and Tucson Fuel Cell (265 miles).
Besides latest fuel cell tech, the automaker has also revealed latest electronic driver aids comprising of remote parking, blind spot monitor, and a self-driving system for single lanes.
Hyundai didn’t reveal anything about the pricing and availability, however, we can take a guess from the current Tucson Fuel Cell which is being offered at $499 per month on a 36-month lease (with $2,999 due up front). Nonetheless, this offer is available only in some areas of California. The Hyundai Nexo might also be accessible in few select regions due to lack of hydrogen filling stations.
Although, the electric battery tech is improving day by day and lack of hydrogen filling stations tilt the scale in favor of electric cars, Hyundai still believes hydrogen is a future for the fuel. They deem fuel cells are perfect for autonomous vehicles because they demand a huge amount of energy to control data communication process and run hardware. Additionally, fuel cells are ideal for quick charging and render extra driving range for autonomous cars that might be required for driving 24/7.
In addition to the Nexo, the Korean automaker also introduced a few hydrogen-powered applications for the home along with a next-generation vehicle interface. Moreover, they have partnered with autonomous-driving tech firm Aurora Innovation.
