RoadSafety UAE has partnered with a German-based tire company, Continental, to introduce tires with smart sensors to reduce accidents in the Emirates. The move is part of the local government’s vision to promote road safety and security of the drivers.
The alliance has implemented an intelligent system that allows the attached sensor on the tire to send signals to the driver. The system also allows monitoring features to manage company fleet by defining limits on road drive and providing updates and alerts on tire pressure and the condition of tires.
According to Maitha Mohammad Bin Adai, CEO of RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, tires with smart sensors such as these will help reduce fuel consumption and enhance tire life in addition to minimizing the number of accidents occurring on the roads. Unsafe tires can lead to loss of traction causing accidents and even blowout if they are in bad condition.
Currently, the sensor is a part of commercial or fleet vehicles but this is one step forward toward ensuring road safety and fleet management in the UAE. Additionally, the fleet operators need to be aware of these intelligent systems and government policies should be influenced by such initiatives to improve the safety of the people on roads.
