A motorist in the Emirate of Ra Al Khaimah has accumulated Dh12,500,000 traffic fine, which is termed as the highest a driver has ever been fined in RAK.
Major General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, commander-in-chief of the RAK Police, told that these fines were recorded by the radars, mostly on speeding. “Most fines came from speeding violations committed by the motorist,” he said. “Even though these were the biggest ever traffic fines recorded on one driver, he had only to pay half the amount – Dh625,000 – after the RAK Police gave him a 50 percent discount.”
Thanks to the Year of Happiness celebrations, he has got this discount, otherwise, it would have been a nightmare for the motorist. The second highest traffic fine recorded in Ras Al Khaimah was Dh250,000, which the driver had to pay in full.
Fines are imposed to curb motorists from committing traffic violations, but some drivers do not care about them and put everyone on the road in danger. Probably, authorities need to put a cap on the traffic fines too, which could ban a driver immediately if fine reaches a certain value.
