With the dawn of autonomous transportation system in Dubai, smart parking solutions are also under discussion to make Dubai a smart city in the true sense of the word. The arrival of electric vehicles and hybrids has led the demand to create smart parking systems for sustainable purpose.
In 2013, MAG unveiled a ninety story automated parking garage in Dubai, which could be monitored by a single person sitting in a room. However, developers now have to consider the integration of electric vehicle parking in the structure of new buildings. Roads & Transport Authority has already initiated its smart parking project in some areas of Al Rigga and World Trade Center. Drivers are informed about empty parking slots in these areas through RTA app. The smart parking system aims at dealing with the increased operational hazards of driverless cars by giving them automated directions.
A number of countries have already adapted smart parking solutions owing to its efficiency, added value, and less maintenance requirements. While talking to Khaleej Times, Andrew Rippon said, “Dubai is still in the early stage but few things have started. We have a long way to go in terms of smart parking and we need to start placing the building blocks for the creation of smart parking system.”
