Dubai Police has launched a new safety campaign for truck drivers to eliminate accidents caused by the sleepy truck drivers.
It has been reported that reckless, sleepy truck drivers, who go for long drives ignoring rest spots, have caused 15 deaths and 14 crucial accidents on the highway in the first half of this year. Last year, truck drivers caused 49 fatalities on Dubai roads.
During a press conference, Dubai Police officials publicly laid out the key strategies of the safety campaign, including increased roadside patrolling of the truck drivers who are ignoring the federal road safety law introduced on July 1.
Colonel Essam Al Awar, Director of Traffic Fines Collection and Traffic Services Department at Dubai Police, said that the purpose of this one-month safety campaign for truck drivers is to reduce the number of deaths and accidents caused by the heavy-good vehicles.
The campaign will follow distributing flyers containing road safety instructions among truck drivers, approaching big truck transport companies to educate their drivers and implementing strict traffic police patrols on highways, including heavy fines in case of irregularities.
Adil Al Marzouqi, Director of the Right of Way Department in Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), also indicated the tendered efforts of the department to increase the rest stops for truck drivers.
Dubai Police officials are determined to reduce the highway accidents and fatality rate through carefully implementing the new safety rules.
