To make Dubai world’s smartest city in the world, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has started installation of smart meters in Dubai Taxis. Around 4,850 smart meters have been installed in an effort to make the entire taxi fleet smarter and more convenient, which comprises of 10,550 vehicles. This project would cost the government Dh68.8 million in total.
The smart meters can integrate with Dubai Geographic Addressing System (Makani), and the automated calculation of toll tariff (Salik). Moreover, these meter devices feature updated map of Dubai for convenient navigation in the city, and the ability to display messages like ‘out of service’, ‘end of shift’ etc for the convenience of both the cab drivers and the customers.
Besides, these meters will have optical sensors to discover the boarding of a customer and can be connected with POS devices to allow convenient payment. That’s not all, they have an ‘Aman’ (safety) system to observe the pace of taxicabs on internal and external roads of Dubai.
Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the board of executive directors of RTA is committed to equip Dubai taxi fleet with the most modern technologies in the world. Last year, we heard installation of surveillance cameras in taxis.
