Qatar is aiming to reduce its carbon footprint on environment by launching their first Green Car Initiative. Under this initiative, three government ministries (Ministry of Energy & Industry, Ministry of Transport & Communications and Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA)) have joined hands to have 10 % of the total cars on Qatar roads be electric cars by 2030. An MoU has been signed between the ministers of three governmental bodies in an official ceremony. Qatar Green Car Initiative is in line with country’s Vision 2030 in which they will strive toward sustainable transport, energy efficiency and renewable energy.
The ambitious target of 10% total hybrid/electric cars will be achieved in two phases. The first phase is outlined from 2017 to 2022 in which a gradual increase to 2% and later to 4% are planned. The 10% target will be achieved in the second phase of Qatar green car initiative, which will end in 2030.
The government will build the necessary infrastructure and will implement laws to further support this initiative to make it in-line with Qatar’s National Program for Energy Conservation and Efficiency. Ministry of Transport and Communication will take lead and include electric/hybrid vehicles in its fleet for public awareness and community’s consent. All government bodies will move in harmony to support the initiative as National Program has already gained momentum in the county.
With foundations of Qatar green car initiative laid down, the government is eyeing a massive 17% drop in carbon emission in government sectors by 2022.
