The Ford Mustang has been retaining its position as the best-selling sports car in the U.S. since past 50 years. However, this record got even better. The results from the Ford analysis of IHS Markit global automotive registration data reveal that it is now the best-selling sports car on the planet.

Ford Motor Company sold over 150,000 Mustangs worldwide in 2016 and saw an increase of six percent in the overall sales compared to 2015. About 45,000 of these Mustangs were sold outside of the United States. The huge increase in the sales is also due to the Ford Mustang’s market position in Germany and China as well as in some smaller nations like New Caledonia, Gibraltar and Bonaire. The Mustang’s arrival in China, which is the largest auto market in the world, has made it the best-selling sports car in the world.

Ford’s official data shows that more than 395,000 sixth-generation Mustang have been built at the Fiat’s Rock Assembly Plant since last two years out of which 98,000 units have been shipped to the buyers outside of the U.S. Ford already doubled the percentage of exports between 2015 and 2016 and the company expects to further increase these numbers in 2017.

The latest 2018 Ford Mustang will be launched this year in six new countries including Brazil, the Palau Islands and the Ivory Coast.
