After the first legal electric vehicle hit the roads in 2008, we saw a major shift toward sustainable energy. Currently, there are around 25 PEVs in the market. The term PEV defines a segment of electric vehicles that includes battery electric vehicles, plug in hybrid vehicles, and electric vehicle conversions of hybrid electric vehicles and conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.
To look into the future of PEV market in the US, TopSpeed conducted a study of PEVs in the US for 2015/2016. The overall sales of electric vehicles in 2016 exceeded the number of vehicles sold in 2015 representing a general growth in the PEV market.
PEV models that dominated the US market in 2016 include the Tesla Model S (29,156), Tesla Model X (17,500), Chevy Volt (24,739), Nissan Leaf (14,006) and Ford Fusion Energi PHEV (15,938). Other prominent vehicles were Ford C-Max Energi PHEV and BMW i3.
Among the different states of America, California led the 2016 PEV sales with 72,361 units sold and 22 PEV models available. The high numbers can be attributed to California’s Zero Emission Vehicle Program that encourages people to purchase low fuel emission EVs at a cheap rate.
Future Of Electric Vehicles In UAE
As UAE government is taking measures to reduce its carbon footprints, sales of environment friendly vehicles are expected to grow in the coming days. By introducing EV quotas in government vehicle fleet and use of electric vehicles as public transports, the government is encouraging people to purchase electric vehicles.
Tesla has also launched its new models in the Emirates and installed some charging stations in shopping areas and hotels with plans to install more in future. The UAE government is all set to achieve its UAE Vision 2021 that focuses on enhancing the quality of air, increasing the contribution of clean energy and implementing green growth plans.
