Sharjah Police has launched 8 new hi-tech patrol cars as part of the Ministry of Interior’s initiative to make UAE one of the safest countries in the world. The technologically advanced vehicles were introduced at the 33 GCC Traffic Week, which began on 12th March 2017 in the GCC region. It strives to make people conscious of road safety. The event was held at Sharjah University and was attended by key personnel.
The hi-tech patrol cars are fitted with innovative cameras, which are linked to the police operations room to render up-to-date information on traffic flow and road safety. The cameras can identify car number plates, catch traffic law breakers and evaluate the traffic flow.
Commander in Chief of Sharjah Police, Brigadier Saif Al Ziri Al Shamsi shared that road fatalities saw a decline in Sharjah since the past couple of years, and the aim is to reduce them even more. The fatalities decreased by 17.6% in 2016 compared to the preceding year.
Sharjah Police introduced 21 traffic campaigns in 2016 that reduced the number of road accidents by approximately 10.6% (from 679 cases to 607 cases). Serious injuries in accidents were declined by 24% as well in 2016. Sharjah Police’s objective is not charging motorists, but to cut down the rate of accidents (injuries, fatalities etc).
Brigadier Al Shamsi reiterated that road safety is among the most difficult tasks faced all over the world and his team is collaborating closely with different authorities to pin point accident prone areas or faulty roads. Their efforts are focused on Emirates Road, Maliha Road, Al Dhaid-Sharjah Road, Sharjah Ring Road and Sheikh Bin Mohammad Bin Zayed Road.
