The 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG GTR made its debut in June last year at the automaker’s facility in Brooklands, UK. Nicknamed as the ‘Green Hell’, the AMG GT R is one of a kind road legal sports car. We recently got a chance to test drive it and below we have put are our findings.

2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Review

Walk around

The sexy green body paint is unmistakably eye-catching and attractive. Up front, the new Panamericana grille along with the sleek LED headlamps and  aggressive bumper adds an overall distinct sporty look to the coupe. Moreover, an active diffuser is also present within the underbody, which improves the aerodynamics of the car on high speeds. The wheels are 20-inch aluminum and provide an excellent road grip. At the back, a titanium exhaust tip along with the carbon fiber wing also boosts the aerodynamics.

Interior

Inspired by motorsports, the interior of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R boasts light-weight sport bucket seat covered in nappa leather and Dinamica microfiber. You can also opt for the optional AMG performance seats along with yellow colored seat belts. The phenomenal cockpit design featuring a black and yellow color trim gives a sense of aviation while maintaining comfort. The front dash also features a high-end display screen, which we will discuss later.

Engine Specs

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R carries a powerful handcrafted AMG 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine, which churns out 430 kW (585 hp) and 700 Nm of torque. The power is delivered to all  the wheels via a 7-speed dual clutch transmission system.

Driving Dynamics

We tested the AMG GT R on a track and undoubtedly the performance was phenomenal. It renders a rear-wheel steering setup for better handling and an adjustable traction control system for an enhanced on-road experience. The heavily upgraded double-wishbone suspension system borrowed from the GT3 Racer ensures an agile and stiff road grip. Furthermore, the AMG GT R features an exclusive AMG Dynamic Select function, which allows shifting between three driving modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. Moreover, the suspension, transmission, ESP and other similar components can be easily controlled electronically via the center display.

During our test drive, we were able to hit the 100 km/h mark in 3.9 seconds. However, we didn’t push hard enough to reach the top speed of 318 km/h. Although for a speed daemon like this, the fuel economy should not be a major concern, but just for the sake of information, it consumed 11.4L to cover a distance of 100 kilometers.

Technological Overview

Besides having a spectacular engine and a relentless performance, the 2017 Mercedes AMG GT R also features advanced technological facilities. It incorporates the latest Mercedes COMAND infotainment system with a touch sensitive controller and voice recognition capability, a navigation system and a premium Burmesters audio system.

Safety

In addition to the regular safety features such as ABS with EBD, traction control system, airbags etc, the new Mercedes AMG GT R also offers performance oriented safety features such as AMG Ceramic Brakes, Distronic Plus (adaptive cruise control) and Parktronic parking sensors.

Price and Verdict

The Mercedes AMG GT R is definitely an authoritative sports coupe. The level of hard work and dedication put in by Mercedes and AMG teams is clearly evident inside out. You cannot complain about even a single thing except its hefty price tag. But as you know, good things come at a price. Its price for the Australian market is $349,000, which equals to approximately AED 973,000 here. The UAE pricing details are still not confirmed.
