Toyota Motor Corporation with the collaboration of Abu Dhabi’s top energy firms (Masdar, ADNOC, Air Liquide) and Al-Futtaim Motors (exclusive Toyota distributor in the UAE) has agreed to encourage the use of hydrogen-powered cars for a sustainable and carbon-free environment in the UAE. The agreement was publicized on January 16 at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) according to which the region’s first hydrogen station will be constructed through the efforts of all partners. The location of hydrogen station has not yet been revealed, but the project is expected to start in May 2017. As soon as the station is built, Toyota will test its Mirai Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV) in terms of driving and refueling under severe local conditions of the region.

The hydrogen FCV doesn’t require recharging, as it generates its own electricity when the gas reacts with oxygen. The 2016 Mirai FCV covers up to 503 km on a full tank of hydrogen and discharges only water. In 2016, the Mirai endured technical testing in the UAE and a small hydrogen station was built at Al-Futtaim’s Al-Badia.

The fuel cell vehicle is an initiative taken to fulfill the national agenda of UAE Vision 2021. Toyota is here to contribute with its own mission of Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050. It will also give the Mirai FCV on short-term leases to the UAE government bodies for better understanding of the vehicle.
