The US President Trump said ‘NO WAY!’ to Toyota’s plans of building a Corolla plant in Mexico. The company was supposed to manufacture Corolla sedans for North America, but the recent tweet posed a slight hindrance.
However, according to the observations of The Wall Street Journal, Trump mentioned about building a new plant in Baja, whereas the plant in Baja already exists. The plant manufactures Tacoma mid-sized pickups and has pre-announced plans of investing $150 million for its expansion. This already established plant has no relation with the Corolla plant whatsoever.
The new Toyota Corolla plant was supposed to be established in Guanajuato according to the announcements made by the company in 2015. The estimated cost for the plant was 1$ billion to make it ready for supplying around 200,000 Corollas in North America by 2019. The plan was to shift the Cambridge plant in Ontario, Canada to Mexico. The factory in Mississippi would still develop Corolla car and would remain unaltered whether the Mexican factory move forward or not.
Akio Toyoda dealt with Trump’s tweet in a placatory manner ensuring him that the sales and productions in the US will not face any setback as a result of new Mexican plant. And that Toyota looks forward to collaborate with Trump’s administration for providing quality services to consumers.
Here’s Toyota’s statement:
“Toyota has been part of the cultural fabric in the U.S. for nearly 60 years. Production volume or employment in the U.S. will not decrease as a result of our new plant in Guanajuato, Mexico announced in April 2015. With more than $21.9 billion direct investment in the U.S., 10 manufacturing facilities, 1,500 dealerships and 136,000 employees, Toyota looks forward to collaborating with the Trump Administration to serve in the best interests of consumers and the automotive industry.”
