The new Honda Civic Type R will go on sale in the United States later this year. Reports suggest it will offer CVT instead of a dual-clutch transmission system, whereas the standard transmission will be six-speed manual.

The report comes from ‘CivicX’, according to which, the Honda officials including the head engineer Mirsuru Kariya, the lead designer Tsutamori, and Honda Europe head honcho Katsushi Inoue, have confirmed regarding the CVT in the new Honda Civic Type R.

This news might disappoint some fans, as a CVT gearbox is not considered ideal by critics for performance oriented cars. For a vehicle like Honda Civic Type R, which strictly focuses on powerful performance, a manual transmission is ideal and preferred over a CVT or even a dual-clutch transmission system.

The report further reveal the Civic Type R will feature a front-wheel drive with a limited-slip differential. Moreover, it has a lower center of gravity compared to the regular Honda Civic.

The report doesn’t state anything regarding the powertrain, but we expect the Type R to carry a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, which will develop more than 300 horsepower. Expect the Civic Type R to debut at the 2017 Geneva Auto Show.
