On last Wednesday, Honda Motor Co. said it is in discussion with the driving unit of Google Parent Alphabet Inc., Waymo to punch a deal to incorporate its self-driving technology into Honda vehicles to pursue its plan of selling high-speed self-driven cars around 2020.
At present, both Waymo and Honda are focusing on research rather than building fully autonomous cars. If all goes well, the Japanese automaker may provide modified vehicles that could employ the self-driving technology, and those automobiles would join the Waymo’s existing fleet, which is being tested in four U.S. cities.
Waymo is more interested in developing the brains to implement the self-driving systems rather than building the cars. Also, the Google’s project is yearning to register the test miles with its new technology by working in collaboration with other automobile companies. In doing so, Waymo had already integrated its technology in Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid minivans, which will merge in company’s fleet of self-driving cars early next year.
