The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) revealed on 27th November that the new Smart Fare service is becoming famous among travelers. The service allows commuters recharge their Nol cards on their mobile phone devices with just a tap.

This September, RTA launched a new app for Android devices, which uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology and lets users to easily top up their Nol cards or application to get authorization for public transport.

Within just three months of Smart Fare’s launch, RTA recorded 71 per cent boost in its reputation.

RTA added options like Nol top up, credit check and much more to their existing app. The application is only available on Android devices.

According to Khalid Al Awadhi, director of Automated Fare Collection at RTA, the Smart Fare service has NFC technology that lets commuters top up their Nol cards with a single tap. Apart from recharging the transport cards, travelers can inquire about their current balance and even transfer credit from one card to another.

RTA will keep upgrading the service. The authorities want to enable purchasing and renewing of public travel permits through the app. People would also be able to buy RTA’s services through their Nol cards.

Al Awadhi said that since the inception of the service, customer complaints have dropped from 10 cases a month to none at all.
