The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan made its public debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show and was later previewed at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. It is one of the best-sellers of Volkswagen in United Kingdom.
The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan was launched in the Middle East at the Qatar Motor Show which was held between 28th Jan and 1 Feb 2016. It is accessible in five variants namely S, SE 1.4, SE 2.0L, SEL 2.0 and Sport 2.0. An additional Sport R-Line package is also available in the lineup.
We got a chance to test drive the range-topping Sport model in Germany. Below are our findings.

Walk Around
The new 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan boasts a dominating personality, thanks to its wide body stance, sharp edges and spectacular character lines on the sides and the hood. The front fascia features a bold chrome grille with elegant LED head lamps on each side. The front bumper is aggressively designed and incorporates fog lamps. Toward the back, the rear bumper also features some chrome elements, while the LED taillights add to the overall sophisticated persona.
Cockpit Impression
Compared to its predecessors, the cockpit of 2017 Tiguan has been improved to render better driving experience. The leather upholstery and the leather wrapped steering wheel give the new Tiguan a premium feel and ensure a comfortable drive.
The wheelbase measures 2,681 mm, which makes it a spacious SUV. You can easily fit in 5 passengers with plenty of space for luggage.
The front dash boasts an 8-inch infotainment system with an audio media player and an automatic climate control system.
The cargo space measures approximately 615 liters, which can be further increased by pulling down the rear seats.
2017 Volkswagen Tiguan Engine Specifications
The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan is available in 2 engine options:
- The 1.4 Liter TSI engine with 150 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque
- The 2.0 Liter TSI engine with 220 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque (the one we test drove)
The 1.4L unit is mated to a 6-speed DSG transmission, while the 2.0L engine is paired with a 7-Speed DSG transmission. It is available in both 2WD and 4Motion (4WD) configuration.
Driving Dynamics
The Tiguan’s 2.0L engine is absolutely phenomenal rendering a spectacular drive on both on-road and off-road terrains. On the highway, I didn’t notice any unnecessary jerks or sloppy acceleration and enjoyed a smooth drive. The 2017 Tiguan weighs 50 KG less than its predecessor. It offers improved aerodynamics, which in turn maximizes performance, especially driving at a higher speed.
After driving on-road, I decided to go offroad to check the 4-wheel drive system. The 2017 Tiguan includes a 4Motion Active Control, which offers superior drive on uneven and rough landscapes. Moreover, the adaptive chassis control combined with traction control and electronic stability control further improves the driving experience on off-road terrains.
On a straight road, I was able to hit 100 km/h mark in just 6.5 seconds. The company limited top speed stands at 220 km/h. I found Tiguan 2017 consuming around 7.7L of fuel over a distance of 100 kilometers.
Technological Overview
The all-new 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan Sport features some advanced technological equipment including an 8-inch infotainment system with navigation discover media system, 400-watt DynaAudio Excite Surround system with 10-channel amplifies (optional), automatic 3-zone climate control, App-Connect which allows smartphone integration, key-less entry, panoramic roof and 4Motion controller for selecting different drive modes.
Safety
The 2017 Tiguan is loaded with the latest and modern safety facilities such as emergency braking, pedestrian monitoring, automatic post-collision braking, lane assist, adaptive cruise control, airbag system, ABS with EBD, traction control, electronic stability control and more.
Dislike
Most of the high-end features are available in the upper trim levels, which cost more.
Verdict
The new 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan is an exceptional SUV with tons of advanced features, amazing drive experience, attractive design and an affordable price tag. The base model, the Tiguan S starts at AED 89,957, while the range-topping sport trim carries a price tag of AED 132,337.
