It has been confirmed on Thursday at the 2016 Paris Auto Show that Mercedes is working on a new hybrid hypercar. The Mercedes-Benz’s outgoing R&D boss, Thomas Weber, confirmed that a Mercedes AMG hybrid hypercar is in works and it will feature the same 1.6-litre turbo engine found in the Lewis Hamilton’s Formula One car.
Talking to Auto Express, the AMG boss Tobias Moers explained that the Mercedes AMG hybrid hypercar will boast a low weight, more power and it will be capable of setting up a new lap record at Nurburgring.
Thomas Weber didn’t disclose a lot of information but mentioned that the AMG hypercar will feature “intelligent drivetrain technology”, which gives us a hint that this would be in fact a hybrid powered vehicle.
Although it will use the same powertrain as the Lewis Hamilton’s Formula One car, but some modifications would be done such as increased displacement, addition of another turbocharger and an enhanced cooling system.
Rumours suggest that Mercedes will build only 50 examples of the new hypercar and it will arrive next year to celebrate AMG’s 50th anniversary. The name of the car will most likely be R50.
Stay tuned as Mercedes might reveal more information in the coming months.
