The Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport (DMAT) is set to contain the number of vehicles driving to the highway at once. The use of devices like vehicle-counting sensors and smart traffic signals will ensure reduction in traffic congestion on main roads and the highway. This system is introduced keeping in view the ever changing traffic situation.

The department has started off by putting up the smart traffic system on one of the busiest roads of Abu Dhabi, the Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Street (the former Al Salam Street).

The signal light, very smartly, changes colour from red to yellow. When there are a lot of vehicles wanting to access the highway, the signal will turn red, thus avoiding overcrowding of vehicles on the highway. If the number of vehicles moving towards the highway is small, it will turn yellow allowing the drivers to move forward.

DMAT also advises motorists to abide by the new traffic system so that traffic congestion can be controlled on the highway.
