According to Dr. Salaheddine Bendak, an associate professor in industrial engineering at the University of Sharjah, smoking on the petrol stations should be discouraged and engines should be turned off while the car is being refilled.
People should be made aware of the causes of vehicle fires, he added. He also suggested keeping a fire extinguisher all the time in the car.
Mr. Ian Evans, principal electrical engineer at Harmonic Solutions Oil and Gas in Ras Al Khaimah described how a leakage in the fuel tank can cause the worst kind of vehicle fires. He advised the motorists to concentrate on the driving only while on the road, maintain their vehicles well, use good car tyres and drive lawfully.
