Ford Explorer 2016 Review

Ford Explorer 2016 was first revealed in 1991 and caught the attention of SUV fans around the globe, it is considered America’s most favorite SUV. The sixth-generation Explorer is the biggest body makeover since the 2011 release, introducing significant design upgrades, in 2015 Ford announced that the new Ford Explorer will feature a new Eco-Boost engine.

The 2016 Explorer currently available in 4 variants and as follow: Explorer (base), XLT, Limited and

1- Ford Explorer (base) which comes front-wheel drive or all wheel drive.

2- Ford Explorer XLT

3- Ford Explorer Limited

4- Ford Explorer Sport We got a chance to test drive the 2016 Ford Explorer Sport, and below is our take on it.

Today we got the chance to test drive the 2016 Ford Explorer Sport edition, and below is our take on it.

Walk Around the Ford Explorer 2016

Comparing the exterior elements of 2016 Ford Explorer to its predecessor, I believe there are not many changes except an updated pair of LED headlights and a tweaked front grille. The Ford Explorer Sport benefits from exclusive 20″ machined aluminium wheels and shiny dual exhaust tips at the back. The overall stance of the 2016 Explorer is sporty and muscular owing to an expressive front fascia and tall ride height. The Explorer 2016 weighs around 2015 kg , which makes it lighter and aerodynamically efficient than its competitor 2016 Dodge Durango.

Cockpit Impression of New Ford Explorer

The interior has been improved from the 2015 model and now features better quality material. The most noticeable element is the old school control buttons on the front dash, which have replaced the touch controls in the previous model.

The maximum cargo space of  2313 litre (81.7 cubic feet) is not that impressive, especially when comparing it to the Chevrolet Traverse 3293 litre (116.3 cubic feet) and the GMC Acadia 3287 litre (116.1 cubic feet). Talking about the interior space, the second-row seats are comfortable, but they are not as roomy as we get the impression from the outside. The third-row seats are good enough for children, as the leg room is limited. But one thing to note that the second-raw seats were a little heavy to flip.

The steering wheel covered in leather and the use of soft padded material on the front dash, control knobs and the gear made me feel like driving a premium luxury car.

Engine Specifications of 2016 Ford Explorer

The 2016 Ford Explorer is available in two engine options:

  • 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 engine that delivers 290 horsepower and 346 Nm of torque
  • 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that produces 365 horsepower and 475 Nm of torque (The one I drove)

Both the powertrains are paired with a 6-speed select-shift automatic gearbox. The Sport model is only available in four-wheel drive configuration.

Driving Dynamics of Ford Explorer Sport

Although I would strongly discourage over speeding, but if you are a speed daemon and have a thing for SUVs, the Ford Explorer Sport 2016 should be your top pick. Its spectacular 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine helped me sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds.

Initially, I drove on a straight road and enjoyed a trouble-free smooth drive, but since this is a four wheeler, I decided to go a little off-track. The Explorer Sport extends an intelligent 4WD with Terrain management system and provides an easy rotary dial to optimize the vehicle’s performance according to the landscape. I switched to ‘Sand’ mode and noticed a sleek drive on the desert safari. Similarly, when going uphill, the Hill Descent Control regulates the speed and traction automatically for a flawless performance.

The 2016 Explorer Sport delivered 10.3 km/L during the test drive, which is quite impressive.

Technological Overview

The 2016 Ford Explorer is loaded with the latest and modern technologies including a voice-activated Ford Sync system with LCD display, Bluetooth connectivity, dual zone climate control, fast charging USB ports, dual-panel moonroof, navigation system, Sony audio system with 12 speakers, front 180 degree camera with washer, rear seat entertainment system and more.

Dislike

The only thing that bothers me the most in the Ford Explorer 2016 is the second raw seats, as they are heavy to handle.
