In order to achieve the goals set in the Dubai 2020 plan, Dubai government is considering how to incentivize electric car usage to reduce carbon emissions.
The new Dubai Green Mobility Initiative Committee (under the umbrella of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy) has made it mandatory for select Dubai government agencies with large vehicle fleets to have 10% electric/hybrid vehicles in new vehicle purchase orders.
The committee was formed with the objective of meeting the ambitious targets set by the Dubai government regarding the reduction of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases by 2020. Plans to incentivize electric car usage are meant to encourage residents to purchase electric/hybrid vehicles. The surge in demand is expected to attract more electric and hybrid car manufacturers.
In support of the above objectives, DEWA will be responsible for installing electric vehicle charging stations across Dubai. 100 such stations have already been installed since 2015. DEWA is also considering advanced technologies which would enable wireless charging of electric vehicles, as the expected surge in usage of such vehicles will result in the need for a faster charging process.
In the last one year, DEWA has become the first government body in Dubai to have purchased 100% electric vehicles for its fleet.
