The world’s first electric highway is now open for vehicular traffic near the city of Gävle in Central Sweden. This fossil free transportation initiative is the outcome of a joint partnership resulting in electrically powered trucks supplied by Scania to ply on this new highway from June 22.

The most outstanding feature of this new technology is the ability of these trucks to adapt to different technologies while driving on this highway. The trucks can be hybrid elsewhere and are instantaneously converted into electric vehicles upon hitting this electric highway.

A pantograph power collector installed on the truck’s frame behind its cab will receive electric power for the truck. The right hand lane of the highway has overhead power lines that will get connected with the pantograph. The trucks have no difficulty switching between lanes, as the lines can get connected or disconnected while the trucks are in motion.

The world’s first electric highway looks all geared up to electrify the automotive world as well as the drivers.
