Federal National Council (FNC) has proposed the expansion of Emirates Road from 3 to 7 lanes with construction of flyovers, rest areas and a separate truck lane to reduce the increasing traffic congestion on the highway. The expansion on the 190km road will be carried out from the entrance of Sharjah city close to the Maliha road exit.

Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Chairman of Federal Transport Land and Marine shared that the road between Dubai and Sharjah needs to be crossed in 10 minutes instead of 2 hours. He said it in response to a question raised by the FNC member, Salem Al Shehhi from Ras Al Khaimah.

The Emirates Road is one of the most important highways in the Emirates that connect Northern Emirates with the border of Abu Dhabi. Currently, the UAE motorists get stuck for up to 5 hours on the Emirates Road while travelling from Sharjah to Dubai, which is an extremely cumbersome scenario for senior citizens and other passengers facing an emergency situation.

The expansion of Emirates Road will feature a total of 14 lanes with tunnels, bridges and 4 resting areas to save travelling time for the UAE drivers.
