The current Volvo vehicles in the market already offer semi-autonomous driving capabilities, but now the automaker is pushing towards the goal of full driverless cars by introducing self-driving trials. In its hometown Sweden, Volvo has introduced the ‘Drive Me’ project, which will use the XC90 models given to regular residents and collect data to improve the autonomous driving technology.
After Sweden, a self-driving trials program will be launched in China. The automaker is currently in talks with the country officials to see if they can provide the necessary infrastructure. The XC90s used in Sweden are capable of going up to 31 miles autonomously and are fitted with a specially designed pedal on the steering wheel.
Volvo believes that the autonomous cars is the best and the most effective way to reduce the number of car accidents and emissions as well as improve the traffic flow, which is why the automaker is investing towards this technology.
