The 2016 Toyota Fortuner was first unveiled by the official Toyota dealer, Al-Futtaim Motors last year in July, and was arrived at the dealership in October. In the UAE, the Fortuner enjoys a strong position in the market, and is mainly popular among families.

The new Fortuner 2016 is available in 3 trim levels: EXR, GXR and top of the line, VXR. I got a chance to take the Fortuner VXR for a spin on the desert, and below are my findings.

Walk Around

I must admit that the exterior design of the 2016 Toyota Fortuner is classy and extremely attractive. It boasts a longer length compared to the outgoing model which ofcourse adds more interior space. The fascia comprises of a chrome plated grille and aggressive LED headlamps with auto levelling function and day-time running lights.

There is a generous use of chrome trim around the Fortuner as you can see in the video. The door handles, front radiator grille, back door and the exhaust tips are all covered in chrome plating. The wheels are exclusive 18-inch alloys in the VXR trim.

Cockpit Impression

The cabin is not just spacious, but is also elegantly designed giving the sense of driving a true luxury vehicle. The headroom and legroom are adequate for taller individuals like me. The leather seats are quite comfortable and relaxing.

The front dash is designed horizontally featuring soft touch material around the edges adding a premium look to the SUV. The centre console has a 7-inch display, while the rear seating compartment gets dual 8-inch LCD display screens.

The boot space measures 200 litres, which is fairly impressive. It can be extended up to 716 litres by pushing down the third row seats.

Engine Specifications of 2016 Toyota Fortuner

The 2016 Toyota Fortuner is available in two engine options:

  1. 7L, 4 CYLINDER 16 VALVE, DOHC, Dual VVT-I which is capable of producing 164 horsepower and 24.9 kg-m torque.
  2. 0L, V6, 24 VALVE, DOHC, VVT-I that churns out 235 horsepower and 38.3 kg-m torque. (The one I test drove)

Driving Dynamics

The Toyota Fortuner 2016 is definitely a treat to drive. As I mentioned in the video, even driving on the sand feels like driving on the grass, thanks to the exceptionally rigid and versatile double wishbone front and four-link rear suspension system. Although, the Fortuner is designed to serve the utility needs of a family, I was surprised by its off-roading capabilities.

The 6-speed automatic transmission system works perfectly on all sorts of terrains. In my test drive, I was able to go from 0 to 60 mph in about 8.3 seconds reached a top speed of 125 mph.

Technological Overview

The 2016 Fortuner renders incredible technological features that set it apart from other SUVs in its segment. The SUV offers a drive mode selector that allows switching between ECO mode aimed to provide a fuel efficient drive and Power mode that alters the performance and acceleration for a much robust driving experience.

The front dash incorporates a 7-inch display screen with 6-speaker audio system which can be conveniently operated through mounted audio controls on the steering wheel. Besides, as mentioned before, the back seat passengers can also enjoy HD movies on the 8-inch display screen at the back.

Safety Features

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has awarded the 2016 Toyota Fortuner a five star safety rating for its amazing safety features that include anti-lock braking system, child restraint system, rear parking sensors, cruise control, dual front airbags, knee airbags, rear view camera and rear differential lock.

Dislike

The handling around the corners gets difficult at times which is a little annoying.

Toyota Fortuner 2016 Price and Verdict

The 2016 Toyota Fortuner starts at AED 105,900, while the range topping EXR trim with 4.0L engine carries a price tag of AED 139,900. The price may be a little higher compared to its competitors, but the performance and comfort level are matchless. Book a test drive and decide for yourself.
