Dubai, like the other major cities of the world, has also recently installed a network of electric car chargers (100 to be exact) as part of its decarbonization strategy. The project is currently awaiting the go-ahead from Dewa, Dubai electricity and Water Authority. The charging stations roughly of the size of street side parking station were displayed during Dubai Car-Free Day.

The electric car chargers project is an important project of Dewa, offering 7% of its total electrical generation using renewable energy resources such as solar energy by 2020 contributing to a greenhouse friendly environment.

Mainly supported by GreenParking, the network of 100 chargers is the first installment of electric chargers in the city, and encourages people into buying electric and hybrid cars, making vehicle recharging fun and convenient at the same time.

The 60 mid-level charging stations installed at parking area just take approx 2 hours for charging, whereas, the remaining 40 high-level chargers would be installed at patrol station to fully charge a car within 10 to 20 mins.

The bill for using mid-level charging stations will be paid through Dewa card; however, GreenPark plans to offer free charging for a period of 2 years on 40% of chargers at car parks.
