The next-generation Mercedes new diesel engine (2.0L) will be powering the wheels of the E-class soon. This is the first all-aluminium 4-cylinder diesel engine from the German automaker, though the pistons are still made of steel.

The Mercedes new diesel engine has been especially designed for fuel efficiency, consuming 13 percent less fuel than its predecessor largely due to a 25% reduction in the internal friction. Despite being 17 percent lighter, the power output is 25 hp more than the outgoing engine (170 hp).

Mercedes holds to its claim of diesel engines being indispensable for the future, but the company also plans to focus on plug-in hybrids. There is a strong likelihood of up to 10 Mercedes-Benz plug-in models being available in the market by 2017. Other powertrains being considered by the luxury car manufacturer are fuel cell and all-electric.

Mercedes new diesel engine will be housed in the E-class by this spring.
