The Korean automaker has just introduced its first dedicated hybrid, 2017 Kia Niro, at the 2016 Chicago Auto show. The crossover takes its design cues from the all-new Sportage and would use only 4.7L to cover a distance of 100km. Built on Kia’s new eco platform, the plugin hybrid version will follow shortly with a better mileage.

What enables 2017 Kia Niro achieve 4.7L/100KM fuel efficiency is its lightweight body, excellent aerodynamic and a new six-speed dual clutch transmission.

The Kia Niro hybrid is powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder mill to produce 103hp, while an additional 43hp would come through the electric motor. The combined engine output stands at 146 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque which is not bad for a hybrid car.

The 2017 Kia Niro features a 1.56-kWh lithium-ion battery that sits under the rear seats giving a flat load floor.

To further enhance the fuel efficiency, the Niro hybrid guides the driver on breaking and coasting for highest efficiency. Another salient feature of Kia’s hybrid car is Predictive Energy Control which helps knowing the best time to recharge or use the battery.

The safety facilities would include blind spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, lane change assist, smart cruise control, lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking.

While there is no word on the price, we expect to see the all-new 2017 Kia Niro later this year.
