In continuance with efforts to improve the quality and service of public transportation, RTA Dubai has launched a pilot project for taxi surveillance. The aim is to monitor the behaviour of the drivers as well as provide extra security to passengers.
The pilot project was initiated over 6 months ago featuring a limited number of vehicles. The surveillance system comprises of one interior and two exterior cameras. The interior camera is focused on the driver while the external ones are attached at the front and rear of the taxi.
RTA has not yet determined if the pilot project for taxi surveillance will be extended to all taxi services in Dubai including franchises. Feedback from passengers has been positive with several commenting on the added sense of security due to the presence of cameras. The system would also protect the driver in case of any disputes.
Other technology initiatives by RTA Dubai for taxis include GPS, LCD Touch Screens, NOL and credit card payment systems and airport check-in facilities.
