The Japanese automaker is developing Toyota telematics system for which it is partnering with Ford and Livio to base it on Livio’s SmartDeviceLink (SDL). The collaborative effort is open to other auto manufacturers and app developers. A plan by the automaker to launch Toyota Telematics System using SDL on a commercial level is also in place.

SDL offers drivers a safe smartphone connection with the car through voice recognition. By giving voice commands drivers can operate apps in the display panel of the vehicle. In line with its corporate goals for safer cars, Toyota’s work in the SDL technology started in 2011 through a collaborative agreement with Ford for in-car telematics systems. The next step was an agreement with Ford and Livio in 2015 for the integration of SDL into vehicles.

Efforts have paid off and Toyota will be demonstrating SDL integration in the Livio Exhibit this week.

Earlier at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show, Toyota also announced its connected vehicle framework which will provide vehicle owners with increased data security through the use of advanced IT and communications systems.
