In an official forum post, a year back, Tesla Motor Company’s CEO Elon Musk predicted that fully autonomous cars will be available for general public in 5 years’ time. However, in a recent interview with Fortune.com, Elon stated that the self-driving cars are possible within the next two years.

Talking to Fortune.com, Elon said the technology needed for the autonomous cars is already in hands and now the engineers need to refine this information and make sure it works across different scenarios. Recently, the automaker also launched a software update for the Model S, which allows it to drive autonomously in certain situations.

Elon also stated that the legislation is slowing down the process of fully autonomous cars being introduced, and the automakers are required to show data which is promising enough to prove that self-driving cars are safer than the standard cars.
