The 2016 Wards 10 Best engine list is here and it does not feature only traditional gasoline and diesel units, but 3 electric powertrains too. This is the first time that the electric powered engines made it to the list. Here is the complete ranking of the Wards 10 Best Engines:

  • 2L DOHC V-8 (Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang)
  • 0L DOHC 4-cyl./50-kW Drive Motor (Hyundai Sonata PHEV)
  • 5L DOHC V-6 (Nissan Maxima)
  • 0L Turbodiesel DOHC V-6 (Ram 1500 EcoDiesel)
  • 0L Turbocharged DOHC 4-cyl. Boxer (Subaru WRX)
  • 8L DOHC 4-cyl./53-kW Drive Motor (Toyota Prius HEV)
  • 0L Turbo/Supercharged DOHC 4-cyl. (Volvo XC90)

All these vehicles are priced below $60,000 according to the rules set by WardsAuto. The winners were selected by WardsAuto editors from total nominations of 31 vehicles. Volkswagen was not allowed to participate in the 2016 Wards 10 best engine content this year due to the diesel emission scandal. The result is based on each engine’s horsepower, torque, fuel economy, specifications, noise and the engine’s technology.
