Those automobiles that made to the list of safest cars for 2016 compiled by IIHS surely have given their manufacturers another reason to celebrate this holiday season. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a non-profit scientific and educational organization aiming to reduce causalities and damages resulting from car crashes. The bar of standards has been raised from mere passenger safety to equipment crash avoidance systems which prevent an accident from happening in the first place.

Out of total 61 automobiles 48 have been able to make it to the Top Safety Plus List catapulting their status to the most preferred ones in the market. Toyota leads by securing nine spots followed by Honda which managed to get eight spots on the list. Coming right behind are Audi and Subaru with seven and six spots accordingly. These auto manufactures were quick to deploy the crash prevention technology, where the vehicle should slow down or halt before hitting an object without any driver control at 12mph and 25mph.

Following this, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (US) also now plans to revise its 5 star rating criteria which will now include crash avoidance and braking system. The changes are expected to be easily adopted as we see in case of air bags which are now present in majority of the vehicles.

Interestingly, the cars built by American Automobiles miss the list with only Chrysler 200 making it to the Top Safety Plus list. However, it is worth applauding that in order to make it to the top, mainstream car manufactures are adopting the crash prevention technology at a very fast pace.
