It is now confirmed, the convertible BMW i8 Spyder is finally turning into reality as the company’s new CEO, Harald Krueger, has stated that a production model of the i8 concept will make its public debut in the near future.
The concept version of the convertible BMW i8 Spyder was initially showcased at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show, and although the coupe version was already up for sale back then, the convertible version never arrived at the dealerships. The concept displayed previously featured removable roof panels, but that was three years ago, so maybe we can expect a new roof mechanism to be employed in the new i8 Spyder.
Currently, the BMW i8 Coupe carries a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-three aluminium block engine along with two electric motors and a 7.1 kWh lithium-ion battery that produce a combined 357 horsepower. The powertrain for the convertible BMW i8 Spyder would be upgraded too for a more superior performance.
The new BMW i8 Spyder will be displayed in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), next month.
