Tesla’s Autopilot Version 7.0 release has made a range of safety and convenience features available to Model S drivers. The system works through data feedback using four modules: camera, radar, ultrasonics and GPS.
Tesla started equipping Model S with the requisite hardware that would allow for an upgrade to self-driving technology in October 2014. The Autopilot has updated features which allow it to “learn” from data from the Tesla fleet. The visual display is driver-focused and the Instrument Panel has been designed to make it easier for drivers to monitor the rides.
The Model S can use autopilot features to steer within lanes, change lanes and regulate speed using traffic sensors. Collision avoidance features include autobrake and sensors to ensure the car doesn’t go off-road. The car is also capable of scanning for available parking spaces and parallel park on command.
Arguably, the best feature of Tesla’s Autopilot is over-the-air software updates which means drivers will benefit from automatic updates of new capabilities and functionalities as they are released by Tesla.
