Land Rover takes its transparent technology a step further by introducing an innovative camera system that will allow drivers to see through trailers and caravans.
The prototype vehicle, developed by Jaguar Land Rover, owned by Indian Tata Motors, is being demonstrated at the famed Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. The annual 3-day event is classified by the International Federation of Equestrian Sports (FEI) as one of the 6 leading events in the world, and the launch of the new technology aims to get a grip on the equestrian market.
The system works by making the trailer virtually invisible to the driver through the use of camera feeds from the vehicle and the rear-view camera of the trailer. This effectively removes the blind spot when maneuvering the vehicle and trailer through complex terrains and while reversing.
Land Rover’s transparent technology made its debut in 2014 with the Transparent Hood – a camera system that provides live video from under and directly in front of the hood enabling the driver to circumvent obstacles in rough terrains and of course avoid the issues of confined parking spaces.
Moreover, the company is also working on a “Cargo Sense” app that will allow for easier cargo loading. Cameras placed inside the trailer/caravan coupled with pressure mats will alert the driver of a shift in the cargo thereby making it possible to load cargo more evenly and take steps to avoid damage if the cargo shift is significant enough to be dangerous.
