Expect the first ever crossover SUV by the Italian car maker, Alfa Romeo to make its debut in mid-2016 as the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO, Sergio Marchionne, has confirmed that all the preparations regarding the SUV (codenamed 949) have already been completed.

This SUV will share its specifications with the Giulia sedan, which will be revealed soon at the Frankfurt Motor show next month. Once launched, the Alfa’s crossover will be competing against some of the luxury SUVs in the market including BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC class.

The plan to build a midsize SUV has been under consideration by Alfa Romeo for more than 10 years. In 2003, a concept SUV known as Kamal was introduced by the company, but it didn’t turn into reality. It was under the CEO Sergio Marchionne’s leadership that the company invested into an entirely new vehicle line up.

While the debut of Alfa Romeo crossover is expected in 2016, it will arrive in the US markets somewhere in early 2017.
