Toyota has introduced the new Fortuner, a seven-seater SUV designed largely for Australia and Thailand and the middle east. The Fortuner features the same rugged body-on-frame construction as the new Hilux pickup that was unveiled last spring. It stretches 188 inches long, 72 inches wide and 72 inches tall.
Inside, it offers space for up to seven passengers in a 2+3+2 configuration. Photos of the interior are not available, but it’s safe to assume the SUV shares at least a handful of components with the Hilux on which it is based.
Power for the Fortuner comes from a 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that makes 174 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and up to 331 lb-ft. of torque from 1,600 to 2,400 rpm. A six-speed manual transmission sends power to all four wheels via a part-time four-wheel drive system, and a six-speed automatic is available at an extra cost.
All models come with trailer sway control, and, properly equipped, the Fortuner can tow over 6,600 pounds ( 2993 kg).
The new Toyota Fortuner will go on sale before the end of the year. At the time of writing, Toyota is not planning on selling its newest SUV in Europe or in the United States.
