The German automaker is one of those companies that love to innovate and experiment with new technologies and cars. This is evident from the fact that the automaker is working on a new i8 super car and 5-Series GT that will employ a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain despite the lack of hydrogen refuelling pumps around the country. The idea of hydrogen powered vehicles was first initiated when the BMW collaborated with Toyota in 2011 and worked on a hydrogen fuel cell technology project.
For now, BMW presented two prototypes; one for the i8 and the other for the 5-Series GT. Not much is known regarding the specifications of both the vehicles, but we know that the 5-Series GT will be equipped with an electric motor generating 180kW (245PS), one KWH battery and a hydrogen fuel stack.
The i8 prototype, since it is built on the existing i8 platform, we can expect it to use lots of carbon fibre in the body structure, hence will be lightweight.
BMW might take some years to have a production-ready fuel cell car, but it’s old collaborator has already introduced its first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, Mirai.
