Mercedes-AMG has allegedly changed tack with its rumored Porsche Panamera-fighter, previously referred to as the GT4.
Early rumors suggested the company was planning to build an exclusive five-door model with just a few powertrain options, however the project has now taken different form that will be targeted at a wider audience, unnamed sources have told Automobile.
Allegedly being developed under the codename X290, the new model is said to have shifted away from the AMG GT’s styling. It is expected to be built upon the same architecture that underpins the CLS-Class, pairing a distinctly low roofline with a Panamera-like tailgate. It will reportedly be distinguished with unique body panels, lighting, bumpers and interior components.
The company is said to be considering a choice between five different powertrains, starting with a 2.9-liter six-cylinder oil burner and topping out with a 585-horsepower V8. A hybrid variant with a relatively small electric motor and a combined output of around 455 ponies is also mentioned as a possibility.
Pricing is expected to fall between the Mercedes-AMG GT and the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, reflecting the repositioning as a high-end but relatively high-volume model with lofty sales targets.
The German automaker has not yet officially confirmed any details from the ongoing rumors.
