After losing out to Audi for the past 5 years, Porsche was finally able to bring home the checkered flag, thereby ending Audi’s reign of victory. German Formula One driver Nico Hulkenberg was behind the wheel of the #19 Porsche which was followed by the #17 Porsche driven by former Formula One driver Mark Webber and finally the #7 Audi R18 e-tron Quattro.
For the past many years, it was Audi that had managed to keep its winning title for 13 races out of the last 15. After last winning a race back in 1998, Porsche now has a record 17 wins at the Le Mans with a daring show on the racetrack. Much speculation had begun to circulate prior to the race, especially with regard to whether the Porsches would be able to show a high level of endurance combined with high speed in order to ‘one up’ the Audis.
After a nail-biting session in which both cars switched back and forth in position, the title eventually came into the hands of Porsche.
