Dubai Police have decided to take up new measures to tackle vehicle crimes by introducing “smart cameras” which will be installed across the city to check for stolen or wanted cars as well as any driving violations.
Two main camera types have been unveiled as part of the plan. The first camera, “Rasd”, is specifically designed to check number plates of cars and match them for any stolen cars. The second camera, “Al Mutabea”, will monitor cars for any traffic violations, which will be double checked by a police officer in the control office to maintain efficiency and accuracy. Authorities plan to install a total of 100 cameras of these sorts, 70 Rasd and 30 Al Mutabea.
Additionally, Dubai Police are testing out “Camera Cards”, which can be worn by officers on duty to help them identify more vulnerable areas in the city. However, these are still being tested and their results will be analysed for six months, after which appropriate actions will be taken.
Integration of internet into police motorcycles is another initiative being undertaken as part of the project, connecting officers to the central operations department. Adding facial recognition, biometric sensors and radars to patrol vehicles are all options the authorities in Dubai are looking into.
The deputy director of operations has ensured the public that these initiatives are all to be implemented in public places of the city and the privacy of individuals will not be harmed.
