Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is looking forward to introduce a “Smart Rental” initiative through which cars will be offered on rent to people on just a tap. The main aim of this initiative is to reduce carbon emissions from the roads, minimise car ownerships and increase the number of people using public transportation.
Mattar Al Tayer, director general of the authority while explaining the initiative said that a person can rent a car for a short period of time by using their smartphone and the car will be made available at a public location. After using the car, it has to be returned to the specific locations near the metro stations.
The RTA will use 3 different ways to offer cars to the public. The first is two-way rental mode where a person will collect the vehicle from a specific location and return it at the same location. The second is a one-way rental mode where a car can be gathered from one point and handed over to a different spot and the third model will allow people to share the same vehicle.
A survey done by RTA reveal that 66% people have shown interest in this new initiative while 80% of them said that they will use the vehicles if extended.
