The recent changes done on 2015 Chevrolet Sonic’s body structure and the addition of airbags have helped the vehicle to perform well in the small overlap crash test and earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award.

The 2014 Sonic did not do well in the crash test and earned a “marginal” rating, so the necessary changes were made onto both Sonic sedan and hatchback versions built after February 2015. The company upgraded the front structure, doorsill and door-hinge pillar of the cars. Moreover, the length of the side curtain airbags was also increased.

The updated cabin space in the new 2015 Chevy Sonic, ensures maximum intrusion of 4 inches at the footrest and footwell which will prevent any serious injuries in case of a frontal car crash. Comparing this to the 2013 Sonic crash test, it had a 6-inch intrusion near the footrest space, which could result in leg injuries.

To make the car more secure, the side curtain airbags were programmed to deploy more swiftly to protect the driver’s head from receiving any major head injuries. The optional forward collision warning system in the 2015 Chevrolet Sonic also helped it earn the Top Safety Pick status.
