General Motors (GM) is planning to move the production of Chevrolet Camaro from Oshawa to assembly facility in Michigan. As a result, the company will have to cut down the workforce of 1000 employees from the current 3,600 employees as the production transfers from Oshawa plant in Canada.
The Oshawa facility will continue to manufacture 5 vehicles: Buick Regal, Cadillac XTS, the Chevy Impala, Chevy Equinox and Impala Limited edition.
However, retirement benefits will be offered to the 2,100 employees to avoid lay-offs as said by the GM Canada president Stephen Carlisle. The company, pairing up with its union partner Unifor, will provide $50,000 (Canadian) to the current production workers and $60,000 to the skilled trade workers who are nearing their retirement. Moreover, they will also be given a $20,000 voucher to purchase any new GM vehicle.
General Motors also plans to invest $5.4-billion (U.S.) over the next 3 years into the US manufacturing facilities which will create 650 new jobs.
