A Toyota executive has confirmed that its upcoming sports car, co-developed with BMW, will slot above the GT86 ( Scion FR-S).
“The intention with the new car is for it to sit above the GT86,” Toyota Europe product-planning head Karl Schlicht told Autocar. “It doesn’t replace that model; the GT86 goes on with its own mission.”

Previous reports have suggested the model will revive the Supra nameplate and cost more than the Chevrolet Corvette, potentially into the $60,000 bracket if the information proves accurate.

BMW marketing executive Ian Robertson now suggests the separate Toyota and BMW variants will not be direct segment rivals, as the platform is flexible enough to support different wheelbases. The comments suggest BMW can deliver a small roadster to replace the Z4, while Toyota can opt for a slightly longer build consistent with the last Supra.

“The cars in themselves don’t actually need to be positioned the same,” Robertson said.

Both are rumored to feature a hybrid all-wheel-drive system and a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, potentially producing over 400 horsepower.

Additional details are expected to be confirmed in the near future, though a recent report suggests market arrival will take a few more years.
